Sri Kanyaka Parameswari Devasthanam & Charities run by men of eminence were noted for their philanthropy to feed and educate the needy even in the last century. The Dharmakartha and Trustees found in the early part of this century that Youngman from mofussil who came to the city to seek higher education had to undergo lot hardship in finding suitable lodgings. They often had to shift from place to place and they could not prosecute their studies in peace. The trials and tribulations were a matter of concern to the then Dharmakartha & Trustees and a beginning was made in June 1916 in pursuance Committee has sanctioned funds to meet the expenditure on House Rent, Two Cooks, Sweeper, Scavenger and lighting.


With this assistance, the students organized themselves and conducted a lodging house for their benefit. The Hostel was run for sometime at 50, Bunder Street and later at 58, Narayana Mudali Street where our K.T.C.T. Girls Higher Secondary School now functioning. Very soon the number of students seeking college courses at Madras was on. The increase and some had to be provided at S.K.P.D. Choultry at premises No. 215, Govindappa Naick Street. The Charities who were aware of the increasing Demand of the students made a proposal to acquire a suitable site and Mr. Rao Saheb C. Cunniah Chetty and Sri S. Subbiah Chetty were authorised to make the selection and arrange for the purchase. Mention must be made of the following eminent personalities.

Early in March 1914 a suitable site (the present land was purchased. Having made the beginning for an ambitious scheme of an ideal hostel for Vysya the Charities had to devote itself to the task of finding adequate funds. Rao Saheb T.NAMBERUMAL CHETTY GARU to who the subject was broached and who at once realized the necessity for the building voluntarily offered on the occasion of the reception to vysya graduates, to construct 5 large rooms to accommodate 10 students and in the wake of this spontaneous offer there came similar offers from others. Foundation for construction of room first laid on an auspicious day in the month of “Thai” of that year i.e. 2nd Feb 1917.


To begin with the Home consisted of one block of double rooms now bearing Nos.13 to 18. By the close of the next two years another block with single rooms now bearing nos.1 to 12 and 35 to 46 and the eastern block of rooms 19 to 23 and 31 to 34 were constructed. Additional rooms were donated by then philanthropists Sri Y.V. Kotiah Chetty Garu, D.L. Chetty and his wife Sundarambal, Sri Singamchetty Ateendrooloo Chetty’s Charities, Sri Narayana Guruviah Chetty’s Charities were constructed in 1949-50 The Hostel is situated on a vast piece of land covering an area of 33 grounds in a very calm and nice was built of M/s. P. RUNGIAH CHETTY & SONS intended for - 4 - students to assemble in the morning and evening for prayers. The History of Home is not complete without paying homage to the services rendered by Late Rao Saheb T. Namberumal Chetty and Sri Vemuri Parthasarathy Chetty. We offer our grateful thanks to the donors of these rooms for their very generous contributions. The rooms now stand in all their glory along with others as Nobel example of the philanthropy of these donors addicting to the grandeour of the buildings of the Home. The Home has celebrated in the year 1967 Golden Jubilee and 1977 Diamond Jubilee, Platinum jubilee was celebrated in 1992 in grand manner. At present the Home is consists of 82 single rooms, 27 doble rooms total number of seats 136.
